Adventures of Monkey King: The Golden Hooped Rod held its first show at Resorts World Genting on November 11 to spectacular fanfare and reception, taking the breath of the audience away with their impressive performance. Showcasing a fresh new take on the age old classic, the production runs from 11 November 2017 to 1 January 2018, presenting a simple story of good versus evil that will nevertheless still charm its audience. Held at Genting International Showroom, the 65-minute show is scheduled for 9pm daily with additional shows at 4pm, 5pm and 8pm on selected dates.

Monkey King and his band of merry monkeys

The Monkey King is a mythological figure in the Journey to the West, one of the most popular classical novels in China. Those expecting familiar characters such as Zhu Bajie: the half-man, half-pig or XuanZhang the Buddish monk were instead astounded by the acrobatics combined with the visual feast created by the 3D special effects used. The costumes and stage sets were also especially vibrant in showcasing an array of colours, fluorescents and even glow-in-the-dark scenes. The production brought the audience on a journey through various places including a mythical mountaintop as well as scenes set underwater and in a forest.

The show has played in Nanjing Cultural Arts Centre, Lian Yun Gang Culture Artistic Centre, Nanjing Sun Palace and Shanghai Poly Theatre since 2016, receiving tremendous response. This is first performance of the production out of China. Members of the Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe are no amateurs, with the troupe being founded back in 1957. They have performed in most of the states in China; they have also been to more than 40 countries including US, UK, France, Italy and Russia. The troupe has won numerous awards from acrobatic competitions, and also winning the highest honour at the festival, Président de la République prize at Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain (Worldwide Festival of the Circus of Tomorrow).

A stunning scene set in the ocean

The story begins in the event after the Monkey King, or Sun Wu Kong has claimed the Golden-Hooped Rod from the East China Sea. It is discovered that the enemy of the rod, Chi You, has also been released, and now intends to destroy it. The tale unfolded as the acrobatic troupe wowed with various skills including straw hat manipulation, diabolo spinning, acrobalance, aerial hoops and most impressively, catapulting. Watch the production to find out who ultimately wins in the battle of good versus evil.
