Genting Malaysia Berhad has always placed the health and fitness of employees of the utmost importance. Resorts World Genting has provided state-of-the art facilities such as the Staff Gym & Wellness studio where Yoga, Zumba and Kickboxing classes are held. Badminton, basketball and table tennis games also are held at the sports stadium and a swimming pool is available at the Executive Club.

It comes as no surprise then that Genting employees also have cultivated a keen interest in sports, especially running. An important component of the company’s CSR, Genting Malaysia Berhad has actively sponsored the participation of employees in runs that raise money for various charitable organizations that support disadvantaged communities such as the The Edge KL Rat Race to which RM18,000 was donated.

The most recent run that the employees took part in as a team was the Augustman 12 kilometer sprint, where Mr. Lai impressively placed 7th in the Men’s Veteran category, clocking in at 53 minutes and 48 seconds.  These runs are a great opportunity for the employees of the company to come together for a common sport and to spend quality time outside the workplace.

Also joining the team for the run was Ms June Mah, an experienced runner who has participated in different runs ranging from 5km to 42km said, “This was a very well-organised event and it was a good way of networking”. She elaborated, “I started off around 6 years ago with short distance events and I’ve moved on to Ultramarathons and Triathlons comprising 1.9km of open water, 90km of cycling and a 20km run. I found the 12km distance to be the perfect distance as families joined in with their babies in a stroller. I am anticipating future runs where we can hopefully have more employees joining together as a team.” She also cited running as being a great hobby that relieves stress and releases endorphins that does not require any special skills or expensive sporting gear.

In 2014, Mr. Jimmy Wong only started running to improve his health and wellbeing with the Standard Chartered 10km run. However, he has impressively quickly amassed a large repertoire including half-marathons, full marathons and even Ultramarathons. When he is not in the office, Mr. Wong is out and about participating in runs, having taken part in four half Ironmans, a well-known triathlon race of 113km distance incorporating running, swimming and cycling in Vietnam, Pulau Langkawi and Putrajaya which is no mean feat.  A memorable competition was the Ride for Sight, where he cycled with the blind to raise awareness for the visually impaired. Mr Wong, who has cycled a whopping 5000km said, “I am pleased with the effort Genting Malaysia Berhad has made so far to encourage employees to participate in runs and I hope that the company will continue to encourage a healthy lifestyle that extends to all employees”.

Ultimately, running is a great sport to encourage employees of Genting Malaysia Berhad to take an interest in their personal fitness and concurrently raise funds for a great cause.
