Genting World Lion Dance Championship is back with 35 teams from around the world


Leaping through the air, balancing on stilts and performing acrobatic moves to the pulsating beat of drums and clashing cymbals - a lion dance performance is always incredibly thrilling to watch. This will be taken to the highest levels of skill in the world in July 2018 when some of the world’s best lion dance troupes arrive at Resorts World Genting to battle for the Genting World Lion Dance Championship grand prize and the glory that comes with it.

To be held from July 20-22, 2018 at the Arena of Stars, the 13th Genting World Lion Dance Championship 2018 will bring together some 35 troupes from around the globe to challenge the defending champion of the 12th Genting World Lion Dance Championship 2018, Kun Seng Keng Lion and Dragon Dance Association Muar, Johor. The troupes in the challenge vary from the traditional strongholds of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Philippines, Brunei, Taiwan and China, to enthusiastic teams from as far as Australia, France and the USA. Representing Malaysia this year are Pertubuhan Tarian Singa Dan Naga Hong Teik Alor Setar Kedah, Pertubuhan Kebudayaan Kesenian Dan Kesukanan Tawau and Che Yee Khor Moral Uplifting Society Lahad Datu, the top three teams from the 18th Malaysia National Lion Dance Championship 2017.


The amazing action will begin with the Preliminary round on July 20 and 21, where teams will put on their best costume and perform their greatest routines to astonish spectators and judges, hoping to be one of the teams with the ten highest point tallies that qualify for the Final on July 22. There they will be joined by the defending champion of the 12th Genting World Lion Dance Championship, the Kun Seng Keng Dragon and Lion Dance Association Muar, Johor – a formidable troupe that has dominated the history of the competition, winning 11 of the 12 Genting World Lion Dance Championships.


The Champion troupe this year will take home a prize of US$15,000 (~RM58,900), with the first and second Runner-Up walking away with US$8,000 (~RM31,500) and US$5,000 (~RM19,700) respectively. The eight other teams that make it to the Final will receive a consolation prize of US$1,500 (~RM5,950) each. A special East and West Lion King trophy will also be awarded to the best team from the eastern and western hemispheres. With the prestigious title and lucrative prizes up for grabs, all troupes are certain to put on a spectacular show to wow the judges and astonish the audience with gravity-defying tricks and manoeuvres.


Fans can book their place at the world’s most amazing lion dance show this year now. Tickets for the Preliminary round scheduled for July 20 and 21 from 10 am onwards are priced at RM50 each with free seating, excluding RM4 processing fee. Tickets for the Finals on July 22 are priced at RM150 (PS1) and RM120 (PS2) for numbered seating, excluding RM4 processing fee.; with the performance starting at 3pm. Admission is one ticket per person applicable to adults, children of all ages and infants. Genting Rewards Card members will receive a 10% discount for tickets bought by cash, credit card or Genting Points for all price scale tickets for the Finals.
