Defending champions tighten hold on Genting World Lion Dance Championship title for the twelfth time


Over 30 teams from around the globe battled it out for the grand prize of US $15,000

Kun Seng Keng Dragon and Lion Dance Association Muar Johor, Malaysia won for the twelfth time out of the thirteen championships that have been held, defending their title yet again with a stunning score of 9.31 out of 10. Leaping through the air, balancing on stilts and performing acrobatic moves to the pulsating beat of drums and clashing cymbals - a lion dance performance is always incredibly thrilling to watch. This was taken to the highest levels of skill in the world in July 2018 when some of the world’s best lion dance troupes arrived at Resorts World Genting to battle for the Genting World Lion Dance Championship grand prize and the glory that comes with it.

Held from July 20-22, 2018 at the Arena of Stars, the 13th Genting World Lion Dance Championship 2018 brought together some 30 over troupes from around the globe. They were from the traditional strongholds of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and China, to enthusiastic teams from as far as Australia, France and the USA.

“We would like to thank Resorts World Genting for their support and for continuously organising the championships. The main objective of organizing the championship is to keep the momentum of the standard and skill of lion dance, where participating teams can sharpen their skills by learning from one another,” said Mr. Leong Lik Thong, the 13th Genting World Lion Dance Championship consultant cum co-organising chairman at the Opening Ceremony.

At the Finals, Kevin Tann, Vice President of Promotions and Entertainment of Resorts World Genting said “We are proud to have sold more than 8,000 tickets for this event, breaking the record. The stakes also increased tremendously this year for a grand prize of US$15,000 (~RM60,000). Besides Malaysia, the teams from the other nations have not only improved tremendously and displayed amazing skill throughout the championships but put up a great challenge.”

Representing Malaysia this year were the Pertubuhan Tarian Singa Dan Naga Hong Teik Alor Setar Kedah, Pertubuhan Kebudayaan Kesenian Dan Kesukanan Tawau and Che Yee Khor Moral Uplifting Society Lahad Datu, the top three teams from the 18th Malaysia National Lion Dance Championship 2017.

The amazing action began with the Preliminary round on July 20 and 21, where teams put on their best costume and perform their greatest routines to astonish spectators and judges, hoping to be one of the teams with the ten highest point tallies that qualify for the Final on July 22. There they were joined by the defending champion of the 12th Genting World Lion Dance Championship, the Kun Seng Keng Dragon and Lion Dance Association Muar, Johor – a formidable troupe that has dominated the history of the competition.

Hong Teck Sports Association Australia amazed the watching audience

 

The troupes put on a spectacular show to wow the judges and astonish the audience with gravity-defying tricks and manoeuvres. Besides the title for the champion, Alumni Organization of Yinge Junior High School, Chinese Taipei and the Yi Wei Athletic Association A, Singapore emerged as 1st Runner Up and 2nd Runner Up, respectively. The Champion troupe took home a prize of US$15,000 (~RM60,000), with the first and second Runner-Up walking away with US$8,000 (~RM30,000) and US$5,000 (~RM20,000) respectively. The eight other teams that made it to the Final received a consolation prize of US$1,500 (~RM6,000) each. A special East and West Lion King trophy was awarded to the best team from the eastern and western hemispheres which went to Yi Wei Athletic Association A, Singapore and Developing Virtue Dragon & Lion Dance Club California, USA.
